- Brisbane and Melbourne are of course referring to the Eureka Rebellion in 1854, when many of the gold-diggers fought back against the British government's unreasonably high license fees for gold digging. It was a major event, so it may seem odd to treat it as a footnote, but the goldrush is not really what this arc is about.
It did have major repercussions for the future of Australia, though, which I'll try to touch on.

Sydney, on the other hand, is referring to the outlaws who routinely held up travellers and robbed them of their valuables, and became a real problem in Victoria for people going to and from the gold fields. There's a certain irony to him saying this which I'll also touch on.

Well OF COURSE it was the Eureka Rebellion, everybody knows about that! Hah... *was totally clueless and learned something!*

Anyway, where's Perth? Brisbane's great, but it's only half a party without Perth!
